How to Install WSUS on Windows Server with PowerShell
Applies to: Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025.
Windows Server Update Services provides centralized approval and reporting for Microsoft updates. Storage and database design should reflect client count and selected products.
Patch controls must align with maintenance windows, application support and recovery. Visit networkmanager.info.
Prerequisites
- Choose WID or supported SQL database.
- Allocate content storage.
- Allow outbound Microsoft Update connectivity.
- Back up WSUS configuration and database.
Procedure
Step 1: Inspect role
Review WSUS features.
Get-WindowsFeature UpdateServices*Step 2: Install with WID
Add services and tools.
Install-WindowsFeature UpdateServices,UpdateServices-WidDB,UpdateServices-Services -IncludeManagementToolsStep 3: Run post-install
Set content directory.
& 'C:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools\WsusUtil.exe' postinstall CONTENT_DIR=D:\WSUSStep 4: Open console
Launch WSUS management and complete configuration wizard.
Step 5: Start initial synchronization
Select only required products and classifications first.
Verification
Confirm services, content path and console connectivity.
Get-Service WsusService,W3SVC
Get-WindowsFeature UpdateServices*Rollback
Move clients to another update source before removing WSUS. Preserve database and content according to retention.
Operational notes
Selecting every product and language creates unnecessary metadata and storage load.
